The current Governor of Colorado is John Hickenlooper, a Democrat. He was first elected in November 2010, winning handily due to the conservative vote being split, but with only 51% of the total vote. He first took office January 11th, 2011. He won re-election narrowly, with the conservative vote largely consolidated, in 2014 (3.3 points, with only a plurality of votes, not a majority--49%). The State of Colorado limits terms to two consecutive 4-year terms, therefore Governor Hickenlooper cannot run for a third term. The next election in November 2018 will be for an open seat, with both the Democratic and Republican fields crowded and wide-open.

In Colorado, Lieutenant Governor runs on a ticket with Governor. Joe Garcia was elected as Lt. Governor with Hickenlooper in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. However, Garcia resigned the post to become the President of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. Donna Lynne, former health insurance executive, was selected by Governor Hickenlooper to succeed Garcia, and confirmed by the Colorado General Assembly to be Lieutenant Governor. Lt. Governor Lynne is now one of ten Democrats that have filed to run for the Democratic nomination for Governor.
