Issues

Energy & Environment

Louis Irwin (Democrat)

"The energy industry is a major economic driver for the state. While coal, oil, and gas are still needed as a bridge to a total green energy future, the state should pursue a goal of transition to 95% electricity generation from renewable sources by 2035." (Campaign Website)

"Colorado’s great out-of-doors are the state’s most treasured asset and a major economic attraction. They must be conserved and maintained for the enjoyment of all and the health of the planet. I strongly oppose the sale of public lands to private interests." (Campaign Website)

Joel Judd (Democrat)

"Protect our fragile environment and work to protect residents and families from dangerous fracking accidents. (Campaign Website)

Meghan Nutting (Democrat)

"Our ultimate goal should absolutely be a 100% clean energy economy. My years of experience working in the solar industry give me the experience and knowledge to understand the benefits of clean energy and how best to grow the new energy economy. ...However, I will also consider those who may be negatively affected by the state’s full transition to clean energy to ensure that they have appropriate support and retraining." (Campaign Website)

Gabriel Thorn (Democrat)

"I believe climate change is one of the most pressing emergencies we face as a planet, and we must make smart, economically savvy moves that put our planet first. ...We must, however, take the welfare of our workforce into consideration. Job retraining and a transition plan need to be a part of any sort of renewable plan, and I won’t support a plan that puts thousands of Coloradans out of work without some way for them to retrain into new jobs in the renewable industry." (Campaign Website)

Alex Valdez (Democrat)

"My plan is to make solar and wind power more accessible to everyone in Colorado by expanding the PACE program - Property Assessed Clean Energy - and allowing everyone to choose solar regardless of their income." (Campaign Website)

"Additionally, I support Colorado adopting CARB rules, which will reduce automobile emissions and bring the most advanced transportation concepts to Colorado first." (Campaign Website)

Nicky Yollick (Democrat)

"Nicky envisions developing five to ten square miles of state-administered land into a massive renewable energy farm taking advantage of the latest solar, wind, and biomass technologies with additional facilities for: 1) Research into renewable energy, 2) Retraining and job placement for individuals making the transition into Green Collar jobs, and 3) Visitation and guided tours for individuals and families from around the world to learn about solar farming and our renewable future." (Campaign Website)

Immigration

Louis Irwin (Democrat)

"The state must do what it can to protect the rights of undocumented but crime-free residents and explore ways to limit the damage to immigrant communities perpetrated by stepped-up harassment by agents of the Trump administration. I strongly support DACA and permanent status for Dreamers." (Campaign Website)

Joel Judd (Democrat)

Meghan Nutting (Democrat)

"I also believe that everyone should have access to healthcare regardless of their immigration status. Therefore, I will push legislation that provides healthcare options regardless of status. ...I attended (and continue to attend) actions that support undocumented immigrants..." (Campaign Website)

Previous Version of Nutting's Issues Page:

"that immigrants are a vital part of the fabric of our communities who should not live in fear." (Campaign Website - Cached Copy)

Gabriel Thorn (Democrat)

"I stand behind our Dreamers and will fight to protect them with every breath I take. ...We need pathways to citizenship, even for those who came here without documentation.  I support safe spaces for undocumented immigrants, I support driver’s licenses for undocumented Coloradans and I support creating a more inclusive state; a state that they’ve helped to build." (Campaign Website)

Alex Valdez (Democrat)

"As a nation of immigrants, we must ensure basic human rights for every person regardless of citizenship. We must protect DACA, and ensure there is a road to citizenship." (Campaign Website)

Nicky Yollick (Democrat)

"...a hallmark of Nicky’s legislative efforts will be to find ways to empower and lift up minorities in HD5 and across Colorado to proudly exercise their skills and voices to foster a nation that works for all of us." (Campaign Website)

Equal Rights

Louis Irwin (Democrat)

"Ensure Equal Rights and safety of all, with no exceptions." (Campaign Website)

"Guarantee a right to work for all able-bodied individuals." (Campaign Website)

Joel Judd (Democrat)

"Stand strong to protect LGBTQ rights and fight against any attacks on a woman’s right to choose." (Campaign Website)

Meghan Nutting (Democrat)

Gabriel Thorn (Democrat)

"It is my stated purpose to stand firmly against LGBTQ+ discrimination and fight for the rights of all Americans to love who they love and be who they are." (Campaign Website)

"On the topic of Gender Equality it is vitally important that we ensure that we close the pay gap and help to break glass ceilings for women who are stifled in their workplaces." (Campaign Website)

Alex Valdez (Democrat)

"As an LGBTQ person of color, I believe protecting our neighbors from hate and bigotry is non-negotiable." (Campaign Website)

Nicky Yollick (Democrat)

Housing

Louis Irwin (Democrat)

"I support the city’s efforts to provide affordable housing, and the state’s effort to balance the interests of homeowners and builders in fixing construction defects. We should overturn the prohibition against home-rule rent control, and include low-income units in mixed-income developments where zoning variances are requested." (Campaign Website)

Joel Judd (Democrat)

"Work to make home ownership and higher education more affordable for young people, so they can afford to live, work, and learn in our community." (Campaign Website)

Meghan Nutting (Democrat)

"I support identifying ways that we can be more proactive about the rapid growth that Colorado is experiencing and find smarter ways to make it work for everyone. This includes increasing access to affordable housing by using incentives and public funding to get it developed and continuing to improve our community while simultaneously respecting the rights of the people living in areas affected by changing neighborhoods." (Campaign Website)

Gabriel Thorn (Democrat)

"The cornerstone of my campaign is managing Colorado’s growth.  We must preserve our natural resources, ensure housing prices are stabilized and address the rising homelessness that continues to affect our state." (Campaign Website)

"I will institute a Renters’ Bill of Rights, fight to legalize rent control in Colorado, support land trusts to stem the tide of gentrification, help seniors stay in their homes, and provide incentives to builders who build affordable market-rate homes." (Campaign Website)

Alex Valdez (Democrat)

"I will fight to ensure CHFA (Colorado Housing and Finance Authority) is strong and well funded, providing affordable home ownership in our community. I will fight to pass a tenant’s rights bill that ensures people who rent have rights in our state. Furthermore, I support a repeal of state laws that prohibit cities from making affordable housing a reality." (Campaign Website)

Nicky Yollick (Democrat)

Education

Louis Irwin (Democrat)

"Full funding for education at all levels is essential. 50% of new income to the state should be used to draw down the “negative factor” for K-12, and fund training in the trades and job skills for tomorrow’s workforce, or affordable university education for those interested and qualified. Policy decisions should be determined by elected boards of education. I endorse Mike Johnston’s “Colorado Promise” to guarantee 2 years of college or trade school tuition for each year of service to the state." (Campaign Website)

Joel Judd (Democrat)

Meghan Nutting (Democrat)

"that every child in Colorado deserves a high quality education, regardless of their family income or their zip code." (Campaign Website - Cached Copy)

Gabriel Thorn (Democrat)

"I support better pay for teachers, better facilities for our schools and giving teachers better retirement options so that they don’t have to worry about working part time jobs to make ends meet." (Campaign Website)

Alex Valdez (Democrat)

"Teacher pay needs to be increased in both rural and urban areas. We need to attract more professionals to teach in math and science. ...By reducing the operating costs of our schools, we can divert dollars currently spend on overhead to our students and teachers. Reducing or eliminating costs for power, lighting, water, and fuel, means more of our education dollars can be spent in the classroom. ...Imagine students riding to school on an electric bus, powered by a district-owned renewable power plant! ...I will fight to protect Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) to ensure our public servants, including teachers, can retire knowing that the secure retirement they earned will be there for them. ...I also strongly believe in early childhood education. It gives our children a strong start while simultaneously relieving their families of the burden of childcare costs." (Campaign Website)

Nicky Yollick (Democrat)

"...public schools in Denver and across Colorado have come under attack from wealthy groups outside of our state determined to see public education chipped away in favor of charter schools and voucher programs. ...Coloradans must commit to supporting our teachers and the unions that back them. Teachers need to be provided with the necessary resources to educate children, and their voices should guide our academic framework. ...School board elections must be reined in by creating caps on individual donations, as is the case with just about every other type of political office. This can be done by passing legislation which creates an absolute cap on individual donations for all elections statewide." (Campaign Website)
