Demo of the elected offices of District Attorney in Colorado

District Attorneys are responsible for representing the State of Colorado in the prosecution of criminal offenses within their jurisdiction. They are independent of both the judicial and executive branch. As the top law enforcement officers in a district, they work closely with district and county courts as well as county governments. District Attorneys are elected to four-year terms.

District Attorneys have a constitutional term limit of two terms however individual counties may extend that limit. As of October 2017, Denver, Weld and Boulder have a 3 term limit for the office of District Attorney.

A replacement may be appointed by governor to complete a term if a current DA resigns or otherwise cannot fulfill their duties.

Why should you be concerned with this office? DAs have wide latitude in determining whether a case should be prosecuted or not. They set and execute plea agreement policies. They have very little oversight and Colorado residents rely on voters to ensure the best person is elected to this office.
